In the western part of the Zhambyl oblast, to the northeast of the Karatau ridge, there are Aikene sands, whose area is 3,200 km2.
Tasotkelskoye and Teris-Aschybulakskoye are distinguished from large reservoirs.
The oblast climate (as well as other regions of Southern Kazakhstan) is arid and extremely continental.
The Dzhambul oblast was formed by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 14, 1939 and included nine districts, of which six were separated from South Kazakhstan oblast and three from Alma-Ata oblast. At the same time, during the oblast organization, new Koktereksky district was formed, separated from the Chuisky district.
In 1951, Dzhambul oblast included the Dhuvalinsky district, separated from South Kazakhstan oblast. In 1957, Krasnogorsk district was abolished. In 1963, Dzhambulsky, Koktereksky, Lugovsky and Sary-Suisky districts were abolished. The remaining districts received the status of “rural”. Chu and Chuluktau (renamed to Karatau in the same year) received the status of cities of regional subordination. In 1964, Lugovskoy and Moiynkumsky districts were formed, and Chu lost the status of a city of regional subordination. In January 1965, the rural districts were transformed into “common” districts. In the same year, Chu again received the status of a city of regional subordination. In 1966, the Dzhambulsky district was formed, in 1967 — Sarysu, in 1973 — Krasnogorsk. In 1971, Zhanatas received the status of a city of regional subordination. In 1988, Krasnogorsk district became part of Kurday district.
On January 08, 1997, by the Decree of the President of Kazakhstan, Zhambyl city was renamed Taraz.

11. Taraz city.
