This World Heritage Site includes two nature reserves - Naurzumsky and Kurgaldzhinsky with a total area of 450,344 hectares.
The territory of reserves, which is mostly wetlands, is a habitat for many migratory birds, some of which are endangered. Among them are Dalmatian pelican, Pallas’ sea eagle, Siberian white crane.
In general, almost half of the steppe fauna species live here, including saigas, whose population has faced the risk of complete extinction in recent decades.
On the territory of this object there are two groups of lakes — with salt and fresh water. This factor determines the diversity of flora and fauna here, adapted to different types of environment.
