Petroglyphs of Tamgaly (since 2004)

Qazaq Geography

The Tamgaly petroglyphs are located in the gorge of the same name in the Anyrakai mountain range, 170 km northwest of Almaty, in the southeastern part of Chu-Ili Mountains.

The complex, discovered in 1957, includes about 5 thousand rock carvings, the appearance of which scientists date from the second half of the II millennium BC to the beginning of the XX century.
In the Tamgaly Gorge, archaeologists have discovered many ancient graves, including stone boxes-cists of the Bronze Age, as well as stone ones that were built from stones and earth, starting from the Early Iron Age and up to the twentieth century.

The central part of the complex contains the largest number of rock carvings and altars, which is an indication that this place was used for ritual ceremonies.
